Each pair traditionally consists of one lower (male), and one higher (female) castanet.
Machine
The opening between the shells can be adjusted with a screw. The base's bottom side is padded with soft felt and additionally fitted with a rubber-cushioned holder that can be mounted on all Kolberg combination stands. This allows the instrument to be played on any surface or mounted on a stand.
