Kolberg Percussion has developed new systems of snare strainers and throw-offs mechanisms. They are called "piano-forte op. 1" and "trio piano-forte-plus op. 2" and they have launched a completely new era in snare drums. Until now, Kolberg Percussion was producing snare drums in the traditional manner, using plywood, metal shells and a conventional strainer with wire snares. The new snare drum series "Tamburo rullante piano-forte" with its unique new snare strainer mechanism "piano-forte op. 1" offers a huge new sound spectrum, is elegant in design and operates simply and perfectly. You can choose shells from hand-hammered copper, or of solid precious wood in barrel construction such as Honduras rosewood, walnut or oak available in two depths.
Introducing the high-end snare drums "Tamburo Rullante" the Kolberg company also offers an innovative series of snares and strainers. These new strainers work somewhat like standard snares, but instead of individually tensioned wires, the Kolberg strands are combined into one unit. The complete strainer has an integrated tension device which has its own tension preset. The snare pressure is adjustable and allows for a clear and precise snare response in all dynamic ranges.
You now have several choices of heads and snares so that a custom-made instrument can be assembled to meet your own individual requirements.
We have years of experience in instrument production and hand-customize every drum from materials of the highest quality. Tested by our experts, the instrument will be delivered fully assembled and ready for use.
Several versions (different types of shells, heads, snare variants) of all Kolberg snare drums "Tamburo Rullante" are always available for testing in our percussion studio. We invite you and will be pleased to advise you on your individual choice.

Shell variants
- Hand-hammered copper shell, polished and varnished
Hand-fabricated shell made of high-quality timpani copper (thickness: 1,25 mm). The rims of the shells are rounded and reinforced so that the head has a firm and stable support. (Utilizing the same principle of a reinforcement ring used traditionally in wooden shells.) - Solid wood shell made of choice high quality hardwood in barrel construction using 25 individual segments
The hand-crafted solid wood shell is 10 mm thick and is constructed using the latest CNC technology. The exceptionally sharp edge of the shell can only be fabricated using extremely hard wood and thus enables optimum resonance. Therefore, the full warm sound of the shell is absolutely clear and transparent in all dynamic levels.
Types of wood:- Honduras-Rosewood (RW) (very hard)
- walnut wood (NB) (hard)
- oak wood (EI) (hard)
Die-cast zinc counterhoop
- Extremely stable counterhoop with 10 section division for a precise tension distribution
- Solid high-quality die-cast zinc, high-gloss chrome-plated
Tensioning lugs
- Round tension lugs made of solid steel, high-gloss chrome-plated
- Spring-mounted lug nuts facilitate the tuning of the drums and prevent the tensioning screws from jamming

Throw-off mechanism "piano-forte op. 1"
The innovative Kolberg snare throw-off mechanism "piano-forte op. 1" impresses with its elegant design, perfect construction and an extremely fine mechanical regulation of the snares:
- The pressure of the snares on the head can be increased in 10 levels employing the eccentric lever on the snare strainer. This enables an extremely sensitive snare-response in pianissimo at the edge of the drum. Employing higher snare-pressure gives you a more direct crisp and dry fortissimo sound in the middle of the drum. The new Kolberg snare mechanism "piano-forte op. 1" enables the player to interact with all musical challenges in their most diverse dynamic situations, even in extreme dynamics.
- The control lever has absolutely smooth and noiseless action.
- On the opposite side there is a large user-friendly knurled screw for regulation and fine-tuning of the snares.
- Due to the processing of high-quality materials, the machine is long-term maintenance-free.
Spiral and gut snares with tension regulation (patent pending)
Similar to standard production of spiral snares, our innovative production method bundles the single strands to form a unit of parallel-tensioned wires with a metal brace at each end. This snare unit is equipped with an extra tension spindle. Thus, all wires or strands are perfectly and equally tensioned at production. Using the Allen key, you can tighten or slacken the overall tension which is regulated by the spindle. This way you can regulate the sound to meet the demands of the composition or of the acoustic situation. The drum can be equipped either with a high-end tension-controlled single spiral snare unit or with a combination of up to six different types of strands in one unit. As standard equipment we recommend the single spiral snare unit (20 strands, 614TKS20). For symphony orchestras a mixed unit with 6 gut strings and 5 metal spiral strands (614STKSN6T) is recommended.
